Birdwatching at Kranji Marshes
I finally visited the Kranji Marshes, which is Singapore's largest freshwater swamp. Most of the nature reserve is gazetted as a core conservation area with no public access, but a small section is opened for nature enthusiasts. I took the Kranji express ($3 for a roundtrip ticket) which dropped me off at the entrance.
There is only one main paved path leading to the Marsh Station (a birdwatching zone). The road is lined with freshwater swamp species and I spotted several familiar species found in Admiralty Park as well. There were plenty of birdwatching opportunities as I walked along this trail.
Oriental dollarbird (Eurystomus orientalis)
The bare branch it was perching on was quite far from the trail. It remained around this area and I spotted it again when I was leaving.
Female olive-backed sunbird (Cinnyris jugularis)
This photo was actually taken in Bollywood Veggies, but I saw this species in Kranji Marshes too.
Black-naped oriole (Oriolus chinensis)
I have seen this species before, but have never managed to get a decent photo of it.
Ashy tailorbird (Orthotomus ruficeps)
I first spotted this species in Sungei Buloh, thus it was not surprising to find it here. A very photogenic bird!
Whited-bellied sea eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster)
It was circling the Raptor Tower.
Asian glossy starling (Aplonis panayensis)
Javan myna (Acridotheres javanicus)
Pied triller (Lalage nigra)
Red-breasted parakeet (Psittacula longicauda)
Spotted it due to its loud calls
There were a few more species I did not manage to photograph, such as the white-breasted waterhen and barn swallows. I did not spot any birds at the observation decks either. It has been a long time since I last went birding with my Sigma 150-600mm and I hope to visit Kranji Marshes and Sungei Buloh again soon since the migratory season is approaching its peak.
