Common Leopard (Phalanta phalanta phalanta)
Common Leopard/Spotted Rustic (Phalanta phalanta phalanta)
Family: Nymphalidae
This common species can be found in Subsaharan Africa and Southern Asia. They reside in a variety of habitats, from the forests to urban parks. The butterfly in this picture was photographed in NTU's Yunnan Garden.
It is fast-moving and can be found in sunny areas or near puddles in groups. It perches with wings in the half-open position and is known to chase away other butterflies from its territory.
The underside of the wing is more glossy than the upper side. During the dry season, you can observe a purple sheen on the underside.
