LG V50s 4K 60 FPS Chong Pang City Cinematography



LG phones are known for having excellent cameras. LG was the first to incorporate a wide angle lens into a smartphone and has consistently featured manual controls for its camera. The LG V50s has standard angle and wide angle lenses and allows video recording up to 4K 60 FPS.


I brought my new LG V50s out for a shoot at Chong Pang City. The government has recently announced plans to redevelop the area, which signifies the imminent disappearance of the iconic neighbourhood shops.


A smartphone is definitely more suitable for street videography than a DSLR. In fact, my phone still captured attention despite being more discreet. I shot the videos on automatic mode, 4K and mainly 60 FPS.


I never expected smartphone videos to require much more processing time than my Magic Lantern raw videos. 4K 60 FPS was pushing my MacBook to the limit, hence I gave up trying to introduce effects and slo-mos to the video. The previews were incredibly choppy even though I rendered them as I edited. YouTube also took more than a day to enable viewing in 4K.


Details captured by the LG V50s were sharp and I liked how the colours turned out after some editing. I think the final product is passable but using a smartphone comes at a cost of not having background separation and variable focal lengths. I wonder if I can find some ways to add weight to the phone so that I can use it with my Zhiyun Crane and also experiment with manual mode next time.
