Cheap way to convert a pull-out bed into a storage bed

I have not updated this blog for a long time because I was busy with the next phase of 'adulting' - getting a new house. Now that things have started settling down, I want to write about how I converted my old pull-out bed into a bed with loads of storage.

I have slept on a pull-out bed since childhood. As I accumulated more junk, I needed more space and decided to shop for a storage bed. However, at that time I was a poor fresh graduate and did not want to spend hundreds. So... I decided to add legs to my pull-out bed.

I purchased 7 strong wooden planks (approx 60 cm high) and drilled them into my bed. Due to the height, the bed was wobbly and should have needed cross-bracing. I was not that handy and decided to use a tension rod to stop the shake and to stack my heavy items against the legs. I then covered up the storage area using wooden boards held in place by magnets.

The storage area was able to hold:

  1. 1 large suitcase

  2. 1 medium suitcase

  3. 1 small suitcase

  4. 2 large plastic storage boxes (Toyogo kind)

  5. 2 small plastic storage boxes

  6. 1 set of piano keyboard and stand

  7. 1 Zhiyun crane set

  8. 1 lightstand set

  9. 1 backdrop set

  10. 1 large camera bag

  11. 1 tripod

  12. Miscellaneous small items

Contrary to what my mother suggested, my bed did not collapse and held strong for 3 years. I am actually quite proud of it and love the flexibility of the storage area. Although I did not bring the bed to my new house, I brought the wooden legs along (because the quality is pretty good and it's such a waste to discard them).
