10/12 bit Magic Lantern Raw Videos
Magic Lantern offers 10 or 12 bit Raw videos with an experimental build, which enables longer recording time with the same write speed. I needed this feature because out of all the cards I own, only one lives up to its promise of high write speed. I know there will always be a mismatch between the advertised "maximum reading/write speed" and actual speeds, but 10 mb/s in real-life usage is atrocious.
I tried out 10 bit videos on a trip to Windsor Nature Park and MacRitchie Treetop Walk. I gave this outing a nickname of "the unintentional 10km trip". Initially, I planned to head back after reaching the treetop walk, but visitors are only allowed to trek in one direction after reaching the bridge. 10 km is a manageable distance if not for the fact that I was carrying the Zhiyun Crane 2. The long walk meant that I captured plenty of footage. Sadly, the video is riddled with aliasing and noise artefacts.
However, I finally figured out how I can avoid these issues after another video shoot at Chinatown. I wanted to diversify my videos by shooting an urban landscape. Chinese New Year is approaching and Chinatown is decked out in festive decorations. This coming lunar year will be the Year of the Pig, which is my 本命年! I finally managed to balance my 10-18mm on the gimbal, and it made the shoot more enjoyable. I experimented with 12 bit video and 3x crop mode here. Generally, I am satisfied with the video, although some compositions were not ideal as I wanted to be as stealthy as possible..
